If you have seen the movie the War Room and have any type of urge, big or small, to build your own. I am here to tell you IT IS POSSIBLE! It is EASIER than you think! And It is what God is wanting you to do!
I want to start off by giving a vocabulary lesson…
Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task which needs to be accomplished.
In other words, it should say: Procrastination is the word to describe a girl named Kelsey.
It took me months to finally get to where I can have a space cleared out for prayer. Oh, and it is not because I am super busy! I have had hours and hours of nothing but it is just the distractions of this world and with the work of Satan, getting that “motivation” is hard. But if your excuse is that you are TOO busy, then I am here to tell you… YOU are TOO busy than GOD ever intended you to be! So if you are reading this in hopes of wanting to build one. Well, congrats on your FIRST STEP!
Now, granted. I only have 2 people, me included, living in my house. But my husband as the whole spare bedroom closet, leaving me the master closet (it is just a basic walk in) and the other spare closet is full of boxes from the move… oh, uh, the move from March 2015… (Embarrassed face). So those of you with kids or other people living with them, my condition isn’t as challenged but keep reading you may get something out of this post!!
First, I clearly needed to come to terms with all these clothes in my closet I haven’t worn since high school… I am 24 now. And they needed to go. If you haven’t worn something in AT MOST 2 season years (as in not wearing that summer shirt the past two summers) then LET IT GO like Elsa, guys, because you are just taking away space that you can have with GOD! That’s how I had to look at it. Because sometimes the pep talks about giving to the less fortunate just doesn’t seem motivating enough. So give it away and help the less fortunate AND you are literally one step closer to God. Also, if you are a woman, or a man who does this, but I know if you are a woman, you have at least one item of clothing that you are saving for that time you will fit in it again… but if you are an average woman or a lot like me, your whole closet is your “one day fit again wardrobe.” Sing it with me… Let It Go! Now, keep a few that means a lot… like that sexy little dress you wore when you realized you fell in love with your partner, or those jeans that you have had for years but are determined to get back in. A few of those are fine, I’m not saying let go of those goals, but we are talking about something else if the only thing between you and your war room is a whole closet that you can’t even wear. So bag it up, give it to your friends, goodwill, homeless shelters… oh sorry, but do not tell your pretty little mind you are going to sell these clothes. I will tell you firsthand that lie is from the Devil. Do you know how hard it is to sell clothes and actually gain enough money for your time and effort? Zip. I would know… because I told myself I would sell my clothes for years and never did. (I had cute clothes too! So that wasn’t it! HA!)
Ok, we are getting off topic. But seriously, first step… clear out the unwanted and unneeded clothes.
Second, if you have an extra closet or extra space somewhere else, season out your closet. So right now, I have all my spring and summer clothes in my closet and my winter stuff in the spare stuffed with all those boxes. Granted, I have no more clothes now, but it wasn’t like I was wearing them to begin with. But if you don’t have an extra closet put all your big coats and things you won’t wear for the season in the back of the closet. The top shelf will probably be better because thickness or bulkiness seems bulkier if it’s all of the bottom (that is not research approved, that’s just my general opinion! Haha, I’m sorry, I just can’t believe me of all people is writing about how to ORGANIZE a closet to make a War Room… God sure does have a sense of humor… anyways.) Then if you are a maxi dress lover like me, of course hang those from a top shelf. Honestly, all my closets are hanging from a top shelf because I have the space of having my winter stuff in another closet but it leaves it looking more open because literally nothing is on the floor. Try to put all the short hanging clothes closet to you if possible, leaving you with more space to sit. Also, if you are a shoe box keeper… I am so sorry to tell you this. Throw them away (Shocked face!) I have over 25 pairs of shoes (DON’T JUDGE!) But my whole closet was crowded by boxes. Throw them away and put your shoes neatly on a shelf or floor.
Third, I know some people are reading this and saying “I just do not have room for this” Trust me, I thought the same thing. But if you clear out your old clothes, you will have more room. I cleared out my closet several months ago and got 3 or so bags full of stuff and I thought there was nothing else. Well, cleared 3 more bags out this past weekend. Also, if you have a dresser or a chest try to organize and put as many clothes in there. I am thinking about buying a chest, I already have a dresser. My dresser primarily consisted of my undergarments, but not sports bras (I bought a small bin from target to put those in, I have a lot) But then there is a drawer for my shorts, then one for my yoga pants/ workout tights, then I had 2 huge ones for sleep wear. Mainly old big t-shirts. Get rid of some of those if you have them. Now, I am a very sentimental person, and some of those big shirts are the XLs I stood in line for for hours while in college because college kids love free stuff esp. t-shirts, or my husbands grandfather who passed and I like to wear them or see them. But, that just means all the other ones I could give away. And I moved something else in that drawer because I got my sleep wear down to one.
Fourth, if you have shelves above your closet, you are now in session! Because that is wear all my junk is. BUT, without having a panic attack, I had to buy some of those bins from bed bath and beyond or target and dump the stuff in there. I moved my overnight bags, athlete bags, all on top. I tried to stuff them inside one another. Then I moved my purses (not a lot) on top as well. I still have boxes of junk I need to go through from the move but I couldn’t think about that.
Your objective is to stay on track, says the girl who went from cleaning out her closet to seeing dirty dishes in the sink and cleaning those to seeing the mailman just run and went to get the mail. I tried to stay on track. But I was getting overwhelmed because now my spare closet is even worse than before. But God said, “Kelsey, remember your goal. Your goal is to just clear a path for you to sit and pin some prayers on the walls and have just a little space for prayer.”
So I didn’t care what clutter I created while clearing out a space because that declutter will come later but Satan right now is trying all he can do to stop me from the main focus of clearing out that little space. It is actually a lot simpler when we think of just clearing enough space for us to sit and maybe pin up some prayers on the wall.
Next, once you got your little space, start preparing!!
Write down some of the main things you want to focus on. For me it was my husband, my marriage, my mental health, my future and identity in Christ, and my future kids (never too late to pray for those even if you aren’t expecting anytime soon) and my grandfather’s health. Those are the main things that are weighing on me. I found some prayers on Pinterest mainly, but I typed in prayers for my husband and several popped up. I am sure you can do the same for any given family member. But it mainly gave me a base: like pray for my husband’s job, his influence to his co-workers, temptations he will face daily, his relationship with God, his heart and his dreams and desires, I also am praying for him to love me through God’s love and not from just his flesh, and that I may submit and respect him even if I don’t feel that love is shown.
If you are single, PRAY FOR YOUR FUTURE SPOUSE, even if you don’t know their name. I have been praying for Will since I was 13 years old. Never too early or late to start.
If you are going through a separation, DO NOT stop praying for your spouse!
Will bought me a prayer request board that he bought at the local Family Christian Store (thank God we have a couple of those, not sure if you do where you are from but I am positive you can buy it or build it!) But I hung that up in there for the small everyday requests, for instance, we just had a family member on my husband’s side die from cancer so I added his close family and his mother that had to bury him. I also put a request on there about giving me strength to stick to working out… just the everyday things that come up in life that you have, a pray request board is excellent for! It looks similar to this.
Also, I know every time I walk into my closet, Satan will be lurking. So I put a prayer right in the center so I see and I remember to pray to rebuke him and make sure I know where I stand over him and HE KNOWS where he stands UNDER me! I also put a picture of Jesus, and some pictures that I like. And found on pinterest by the way. Follow my next blog for links to pictures and prayers to pin up.
Okay so, here is what my closet looked like when I cleared it out and before I started the preparing! I wish I would have took a picture of the before, but it may have been better if i didn’t! *Embarrassing*
God actually provided me with more room than I could even fathom!
This is the link of the blog that I got my inspiration from. She doesn’t have nearly the room that I have because she has children and she has a smaller closet I believe, but I think she has 3 or 4 children actually. But her set up is so much cuter! Maybe one day I’ll be able to have it a little more cozy like hers. http://pin.it/YGPSxL2
This is the spare closet with my winter clothes and random junk.
SO hopefully this inspired you to create that space! If you honestly do not have ANY room in your closet. Clear out a corner in a room and create something like this..
I pray that God moves something inside you to take a space in your house and clean it out for Him.
Also, PLEASE come back and read my new blog I’ll be posting after I return from out of town this weekend. I’ll put it up Monday the 18th of April. The next one will be more about preparing for your space and what prayers are needed. And some book suggestions. So this week, take time and start cleaning out and then come back and read what to put it in! I can’t wait.
Until next time, Kels
